Margaretha Elisabeth Hudtwalcker (1748 – 1794) was a daughter of Jacob Hinrich Hudtwalcker (1710 – 1781) and Sara Elisabeth née Ehlers (1728 – 1799). In 1769, when she was 20 years old, she married Johann Nikolaus Milow (1738 – 1795). He was a German theologian, philosopher (Dr. Phil.), and Lutheran pastor. He served as a parish priest in Lüneburg and later in Wandsbek (which is a district of Hamburg today). He represented the educated, academic bourgeoisie of the Enlightenment. The couple had 8 children: Jacob Heinrich (1770 – 1837), Johann Nicolaus (1772 -1850), Johanna Christiane, Cäcilie Wilhelmine (1777/1778 – place and year of death unknown), Maria Susanna Nicolina (1783 – 1837), Henriette (1779 – 1808), Margarethe Elisabeth (1773 – 1850) and Caroline Maria Anna (1774 – 1840)-
Of her 8 children, Maria Susanna Nicolina married Gottlieb Woerman (1780 – 1839). Their son, Carl (1813 – 1880), was in his time the largest private shipowner in the world. His transatlantic shipping company later merged with Norddeutscher Lloyd to form Hapag-Lloyd AG. Carl was also involved in trade with countries in the Americas, India and Africa, and established one of the leading West African trading companies of the late nineteenth century.
Margaretha’s sixth daughter, Henriette (1779 – 1808), who married Johann Heinrich Köster, was the mother of Heinrich Köster, founder of the Köster Foundation, which to this day remains one of Hamburg’s leading institutions supporting disadvantaged children and the elderly. In 1995 the foundation honored Margaretha with a sculpture and commemorative plaque. The sculpture is prominently displayed within the main entrance lobby of the foundation’s senior residential complex and community center in Hamburg, situated at Amalie-Dietrich-Stieg 2 in the district of Barmbek-Nord.
