Martin’s homage to his Papa

I don’t want to go on and on about all the good things my papa did in his life, because any attempt to do so would fall short.
I just want, on behalf of my family, to thank you for all the displays of affection. It’s been truly overwhelming — so many greetings these past few days, so many sincere hugs, laced with smiles that surely bring back memories of a laugh my dad once elicited from you.
That’s why I’d like you to help me say goodbye to my papa the way he deserves.
To my dear old man, who made his own way in this world and achieved everything.
To the one who did so well in his life, who earned so much affection that today, generously, you come to give him.
To the man who built this wonderful family, to which I am proud to belong.
I ask you to help me send him off as I believe he deserves to leave this world: with applause.
A big round of applause for the great Tony Hudtwalcker.
For those goals.
For those laughs.
For those horses.
I want to end with a very special thank you.
We, as children, have suffered terrible pain recently in concern for my father’s health.
But there was someone who, in addition to that pain, had four more worries. Someone who left a doctor’s appointment or an emergency room with optimism and an absolutely unreal strength, just to give us peace of mind.
Someone who stood by us until the very end, and that’s my mother.
Mama, today we begin a different stage, a different phase. With such great pain that we may never overcome, but with which we will learn to live.
I want you to know, mama, that today your children live for you and through you.
