The man behind the street sign

Hudtwalcker Shield

When on April 22, 1899, the old Eppendorfer Strasse in Winterhude was renamed Hudtwalckerstrasse, Hamburg honored Senator Dr. Martin Hieronymus Hudtwalcker (1787-1865). He fulfilled many roles: Senator, lawyer, Chief of Police, Chief School Administrator, and co-founder of the Rauhes Haus. The newspaper Hamburgischer Korrespondent honored Hudtwalcker's merits as follows:

“The merits of Hudtwalcker regarding the Hamburg church system lay not so much in the direction of church administration, but rather in the field of defending the old biblical and confessional faith against the rationalism of his time…"

Hamburger Abendblatt, Thursday, November 25, 1971
